Overview

In tourism settings, such as city visitor centers, museums, and retail stores specializing in outdoor clothing and equipment, touchscreens are increasingly being used to present content through interactive graphics and motion videos. These presentations create an immersive, self-driven experience, allowing users to navigate information at their own pace and enhancing their overall engagement.

My Role - As a designer, I was responsible for creating a stand-alone web app using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Using the resources and instructions provided in class, I developed an application designed for installation on a touchscreen kiosk. This kiosk is intended to be placed in museums across Ontario, providing visitors with an interactive and engaging way to explore museum exhibits, historical artifacts, and related information.

Goals

The main objective of this project was to design an intuitive and engaging user interface tailored for touchscreen interaction. The app needed to be accessible to a wide range of users, ensuring readability, ease of navigation, and adaptable content. Motion graphics and animations were integrated to enhance engagement while maintaining a seamless and non-overwhelming experience. Additionally, a system was developed to allow museum staff to update content efficiently without requiring extensive technical knowledge. Lastly, optimizing the application for smooth performance across various touchscreen kiosks, including both high-end and budget-friendly devices, was a critical goal.

Challenges

One of the main challenges was designing for a wide range of users, each with varying accessibility needs. Balancing a clean, visually appealing interface with the functional demands of the app required careful consideration. Ensuring the app’s performance was optimized for both high and low-end devices, as well as handling complex menus and interactive content, added another layer of complexity.

Deliverables

  • Branding: A cohesive visual identity, including a carefully selected color scheme, typography, and UI elements the Ontario Museums Brand theme.
  • Layout: A well-structured interface with intuitive navigation, ensuring a seamless user experience for Ontario museums visitors.
  • Coding: An interactive, fully functional kiosk app prototype featuring dynamic animations, interactive exhibits, and multimedia elements.
